This peaceful desert river relaxation exercise describes a peaceful river in a desert valley. Imagining being in nature and floating down the slow, shallow river in a boat can allow you to relax.
Get into a comfortable position, sitting in a supportive chair or lying down. Close your eyes and begin by relaxing your body and calming your mind. Let’s use slow, calm breathing to let you start to relax as you begin the peaceful desert river relaxation.
Breathe in slowly, drawing the air all the way down into your body, and letting your muscles relax as your body expands. Because slow breathing helps you relax, continue to breathe slowly.
Now breathe out, releasing the air very slowly, letting your shoulders drop lower and relax slightly.
Breathe in…and out…
And in….out…
Breathe in slowly…and out…
And inhale…and exhale…
Now focus on a few areas of your body that tend to hold the most tension. Let’s begin with your hands. Open your hands to a neutral, relaxed position. If you have been holding your hands tightly closed, allow them to loosen. Let your hands rest comfortably.
Relax your shoulders. Allow them to drop slightly…lowering your shoulders away from your ears. Ease your shoulders gently back to allow your chest to open up. Breathe…allowing the air to move down…
Relax your jaw. Your upper and lower teeth should be slightly apart or only gently touching. Let your jaw be nice and loose and relaxed.
Keep breathing slowly…smoothly…gently. Becoming more relaxed with each breath you take.
Notice any areas in your body that feel tense…and consciously allow the muscles there to relax…to release. To be loose and comfortable.
